The first order was to go to the computer lab to learn about our activities for the day, as we had an ambitious plan to build volcanoes out of water bottles, glue, and sand.  There were videos on activitytv.com which helped give everyone an idea about what we were going to attempt.  We had no idea if it would actually work, but we thought if the kids on the internet could do it, so could we.

WNA Boys Backpacking TripThe boys backpacking trip in collaboration with Big City Mountaineers concluded this past weekend, and youth returned with inspiring stories of wilderness adventures to share. The youth trekked across the Sierra Mountains, visiting beautiful national parks like the National Sierra Forest and Ansel Adams wilderness. The intensive trip helped the youth achieve personal goals and immersed them in a new, exciting and challenging experience.

The youth learned a wide range of useful tricks and survival skills for the outdoors, including essentials like making a campfire, and pitching a tent. The trip also fostered teamwork and appreciation for the environment, as the youth learned to honor the backpacker's code and left no trace of their presence. Tips and tricks for surviving in the wilderness were shared, including a special way of cleaning plates to minimize the impact on the environment.

WNA Girls Backpacking TripIn the first annual girls backpacking trip with WNA, youth experienced fascinating landscapes and challenged themselves, building strength and community. After the trip, the youth were excited to share their stories, and displayed expert knowledge of backpacking skills. In collaboration with Big City Mountaineers, youth from the program were able to visit many natural wonders, including Lillian Lake and the Fernandez Trail.

Last Saturday, WNA focused on poetry and self-expression, as the youth learned about different mediums for expressing their identity, hopes and dreams. The sharing of personal goals and life experiences during the program allowed the youth to connect with each other and the program volunteers.

Aug 15 - Sharing Talents and Unique Perspectives Print

Last Saturday at WNA was memorable and inspiring, as the youth expressed their unique abilities and perspectives through activities like creative cartooning and clay modeling. The day was an enriching experience for all, as even those who were initially reluctant ended the day with positive attitudes, and parents showed their support of the program.  

In a cartooning activity, students learned how to draw a cartoon character, and then began working on cartoon stories of their own, sketching imaginary characters and sharing funny captions. The exploration with cartooning continued, as the youth watched informational videos, learning how to draw other cartoon characters, on activitytv.com, a site full of instructions for entertaining activities. Youth sketched along with these videos, learning how to draw intriguing characters like vampires and pirates, inspiring further creative artwork.
