This past Saturday was another fun art day. It’s fun both for the youth as well as the program committee. We, members of the program committee, sometimes find ourselves fighting over the art days because they are so much fun to plan and lead. Anyhow, have you heard of the Paper Box World or Cubeecraft? You should check them out, but in short, you print out these layouts of different characters like Ninja Turtles, Sonic, Chomp or what have you and its really simple... you cut out the shapes, fold on the dotted line and you have a “paper box” version of the character. In our case, to make it a little more challenging and artsy, we printed out the outlines of the shapes instead of the fully colored character so the youth could color it themselves. Here is Naar (Kid of the Day), and her “paper box” character, Chomp.

What Now America - Art Day: Oct 17, 2009

So, at the end of the day, some pigs were blue, some elephants had a different color on each side and some of the younger kids’ boxes didn’t look so much like a box... but, we had another great day. Everyone used their imagination to create a unique character and crafting skills were boosted up a notch as everyone had to cut their precise shapes out and fold a perfect square.

Like always, a healthy choice of food was emphasized as we made chicken fajitas along with lots of greens and platters of bananas, strawberries and grapes. Our GYM traditions - where everyone stands in a circle and youth volunteers lead an exercise - were reiterated as we welcomed new faces to the program. Along with that came another induction ceremony as the new youth agreed to the five, very simple, WNA rules at the end of the day:

  1. Be respectful of myself and others
  2. One mic
  3. Leave baggage at the door
  4. Always try my best
  5. Have fun!
