Today's theme revolved around personal hygiene. As basic as this may be, we decided this would be a good day to cover just how important it is to keep your body clean. We learned how personal hygiene plays an important role in keeping you healthy and feeling good about yourself. As a start to our day we decided to introduce this topic to our kids through using a resourceful child and youth health website: www.cyh.com. The students were asked to read about areas such as, smelling clean, clothes, shoes, feet, hair and teeth- we all agreed no one enjoys being around a stinky person! As a group we completed a crossword puzzle together and had a group discussion about the importance of keeping up with our hygiene on a daily basis.
An extra special part of today was our dental hygiene 101 orientation! All the students present were given full size toothpaste, toothbrushes and floss kits to take home. In the program, we went over good brushing techniques- the importance of brushing and flossing on a daily basis. How often does one get to see nearly 50 kids all brush their teeth enthusiastically in the middle of a classroom as a group? Possibly never! Given our resources and classroom setting, besides a few cups of water spilling, we had an overall successful dental orientation! The second half of the program consisted of going to the gym where kids are given time to freely play and do whatever physical activity they wished to partake in. We had our basketball players, double dutch girls, soccer players, and even dancers who were filmed showing off their new dance routine. The last part of our day, our social enrichment activity today was a wrap up of what the children and youth learned in regards to the upkeep of personal hygiene. The kids were grouped together and asked to come up with specific topics in personal hygiene to cover in a skit where they would act out in front of everyone. The skits turned out to be entertaining and very informative and we hope they all learned just how important it is to keep clean! |
