| | 2009 B2S | A Mom’s Letter | Lean But Not Mean | 2 0 0 9 B 2 S Hello {contact.first_name} {contact.last_name}, We kicked off our second year! of Saturday programs serving the West Oakland community with our 2nd annual back to school event. This celebration for the whole family was a smashing success. We supplied attendees with over: - 200 bags of school supplies,
- 2000 lbs of groceries,
- served over 1200 healthy lunches, and
- registered 20 new youth to the program.
The day was alive with face painting, math facts, educations games, sack races and many other fun activities. You can see the great photos and video from the day by clicking here. At this year’s event we truly noticed our reputation in the community as a reliable, safe destination for youth of all ages – and their families. A special thanks to all of our volunteers who participated through My Own Two Hands and our donors for making this happen. As we move into the rest of the school year we ask for your help keeping up with the increased demand. We supply take-home grocery bags and healthy lunches every week. Just $25 or $50 would greatly offset food and curriculum supply costs. Please make a donation today. A M o m ' s L e t t e r Last week I received another letter from an appreciative parent. These letters mean so much to us at WNA. We send them out to the entire board (who are also the staff) and talk about what we can do to make sure we serve as many families in ways that help them and the youth. I’ve included a few excerpts from the mother of Cody and Eric below. "The kids are given help with homework. This has been a real help to me. They'll sometimes really resist doing their work, or resist help from me. But they'll do it at WNA, & they'll accept help there. Also, the computer access helps, as some of my daughter's assignments involve the computer, & she doesn't usually have access elsewhere, on the weekends (& sometimes on weekdays. Her school's computers are currently not working.) Staff from the program help keep her on- track (she has A.D.D.)." "The staff & kids in this program are quite diverse. I always appreciate this, as my kids are adopted, & of different races. There is a large age-range of kids who attend. I have witnessed only polite, appropriate behavior there (I work for OUSD, I know this is not necessarily the case with large groups of kids.) The staff are friendly, competent, & really care about the kids." "I've been very impressed with this program, & actively refer friends to it." We’re so happy to be making an impact on lives in our community. Your support has helped us. L e a n B u t N o t M e a n As we prepare our budget for this school year we know we need to run lean. This is nothing new to us. As a start-up all-volunteer organization we thrive on very little. With your help we can shine even more. Here are some of our goals for the year: - Hire our first paid staff member: We hope to afford a part time program coordinator to help us plan our SLAM! Curriculum, lead the Saturday program and offer insight we can use to better our services. Can you help us become a staff of 1?
- Host a huge Thanksgiving Feast: Last year we served over 100 meals at our Thanksgiving event. This year we expect a bigger turnout on Nov 28th. Just $20 would fund 5 meals for the day. How many kids will you feed?
- Open minds with field trips and adventures: This last year’s rock climbing outing and back packing trips open new possibilities for our youth. We hope to offer many similar new experiences for all age groups. Will you send a kid packing?
Please help us meet our goals by making a donation today. We’re also looking for a donor willing to help us with an end of year matching gift campaign. If you’re able and as excited by our youth as we are – shoot me a line at

| Forward to Friends | Donate | WhatNowAmerica.org Girls Trip | Boys Trip | Back to School | G i r l s T r i p On the first annual girls backpacking trip, youth experienced fascinating landscapes and challenged themselves, building strength and community. After the trip, the youth were excited to share their stories, and displayed expert knowledge of backpacking skills. The backpacking participants described the many differences between the outdoors and their homes, sharing the perks of being immersed in nature, and the survival skills learnt in the wilderness. The dazzling beauty of the night sky in unpolluted air was a highlight, as the youth observed the moon and individual stars. Lillian Lake impressed the youth with clear and sparkling blue waters, showing the natural landscape’s reflection, “like in movies”, as described by one of the trip participants. The hikers also ran across a number of different animals, including marmots, chipmunks, and an impressive young buck. In addition, they showed great resourcefulness in dealing with pests like flies, and adapting to weather conditions. Read More B o y s T r i p The boys backpacking trip in collaboration with Big City Mountaineers concluded on August 22nd, and youth returned with inspiring stories of wilderness adventures to share. The youth trekked across the Sierra Mountains, visiting beautiful national parks like the National Sierra Forest and Ansel Adams wilderness. The intensive trip helped the youth achieve personal goals and immersed them in a new, exciting and challenging experience. The youth learned a wide range of useful tricks and survival skills for the outdoors, including essentials like making a campfire, and pitching a tent. The trip also fostered teamwork and appreciation for the environment, as the youth learned to honor the backpacker's code and left no trace of their presence. Tips and tricks for surviving in the wilderness were shared, including a special way of cleaning plates to minimize the impact on the environment. Read More B a c k t o S c h o o l E v e n t Our Back to School event is one of many annual events that we host; it's a full-day event where we bring together the community in order to set the mood as the young ones in the community start going back to school. During the event, we have a number of activities going on. The Fire Department is always nice enough to show up in their fire engine for a fire prevention lesson. We have dentist volunteers who attend the event with dental supplies to give hygiene lessons. Other local organizations offer resources such as healthy eating and so on. Last year, more than 200 community members attended our first annual Back to School event. We passed out 80+ backpacks and more than one thousand other school supplies (pens, pencils, notebooks, rulers, etc.). This year, we are expecting a larger number of participants as our advertisement efforts have grown. More info | | | | | |

 | Quarterly Newsletter: July 2009 Issue 2 | I’d like you to meet Addrell. Recently, I received a certified letter from his grandmother. She wrote me in thanks for our program’s many offerings, and for the myriad new experiences Addrell has had. In particular, it seems creating and then watching a video of himself for WNA on YouTube has resulted in a distinct improvement in Addrell’s self esteem.
I can’t tell you how happy I was to read her letter. This is why we are here. We want to offer our participants new experiences and new opportunities to enhance their lives and help them to grow in positive ways to give them the confidence to succeed. This is but one small way in which we do that each Saturday afternoon in West Oakland.
Thank you for your continued support,
Milad Yazdanpanah Executive Director
| | | Youth Backpacking Trip (Top^) | As a part of our continued partnership with Big City Mountaineers, we have the chance to sponsor two groups of teens for a 6-day, no-frills backpacking trip in the high Sierras. 5 girls and 5 boys will be selected to join an equal number of coach/counselors on a physically and emotionally challenging adventure. The teens will learn new ideas about age/ethnic diversity, self-esteem, environmental awareness, and interpersonal relationships. This is a very rewarding and amazing opportunity for personal growth in their lives, as I can attest first-hand. Read More | | Open House for Open Minds (Top^) | | Saturday, July 11th, we will be holding our 1st annual Open House event for families of our youth participants. As WNA supporters, donors and friends you are invited to join us. We’ll be serving lunch, displaying youth portfolios and announcing plans for this next school year. Learn More | | My Life (Poem)(Top^) | | My life is wonderful, but not wonderful enough. I had someone who was close to me, but he gone now. Sometimes I wish he wasn't, but I still raise my head up. Even though my head is raised up high, my face is still wet from the tears I cry. Arianna Age 8 | | We’re Growing! (Top^) | | As an all volunteer organization we pride ourselves on low-overhead and determined dedication. However, as we see more youth enter our program we’re finding we need an experienced program coordinator to guide our SLAM (Science Language Art Math) curriculum. Please help us to hire our first staff member. Make a donation today. | | | |

2009 Oakland Earth Day - Results |

Monday, 20 April 2009 12:00 |
 | 2009 Oakland Earth Day | Dear {first_name} {last_name} With a great deal of success, Oakland Earth Day 2009 resulted in planting over 150 plants, trees, and flowers, general clean up, over 20 gallons of paint, and creation of a 12x20 mural. Over 150 students, teachers, volunteers, and community members contributed to our success. Such an event could not happen without everyone pulling together in an effort to make a difference in our community. Don’t take my word for it, see what everyone else has to say about the event and why they were there!
A special thanks to our event sponsors. This could not have happened without your support. Thank You!
Warmest Regards,
Milad Yazdanpanah Executive Director
| | | Oakland Tribune Article(Top^) | Hot off the press, the Oakland Tribune featured our event on their front page. This article can be viewed online by going to http://www.insidebayarea.com/news/ci_12173516. The mural effort was spearheaded by a local muralist Kristi Holohan who not only designed the mural, but donated all her materials and time. | | Earth Day 2009 Video(Top^) | Many of the Earth Day participants were interviewed and asked the following questions: 1. What does earth day mean to you? 2. What is your role for today? 3. What difference would you like to make on Earth Day? Please check out the video and see what people had to say. www.whatnowamerica.org | | Twitter(Top^) | In an effort to keep you better informed about our program, What Now America, is now Twitting! Renew Your Commitment to Better our Community
RSVP Now Please join What Now America, KIPP Bridge Charter School and the City of Oakland on Saturday April 18th for EARTH DAY 2009. Spend your AM with us giving back to the community and making a difference. | | Meet Trish (Program Attendee/Volunteer) (Top^) | Trish has been attending our program since our very first kickoff event. She came to our event with her nieces and nephews in hand allowing us to provide them with a fun filled, educational day. However, what we did not expect is to be able to build such a strong relationship and bond with Trish that would have her returning back to our programs on a weekly basis.
Trish has become an active member of her own community- she lives in the neighborhood and says she has never felt so motivated to giving back to her neighbors and is impressed with the board members of What Now America. "WNA is able to get parents and families to come and stick around during the program times on Saturdays, something that is just not typical as we are located in such a rough area," Trish says.
Attending our program on a routinely basis, not only does Trish help volunteer as a leader for the children who attend, but many of times she is also at the table participating in the many activities the younger children partake in.
According to Trish, "a day here is enlightening, empowering, and exciting. When you can change a kid's heart and show them something new- you know it just can't get any better than that." | | Meet Lela Mae (Program Attendee) (Top^) | Lela Mae is not your typical senior in high school. At the age of 17, Mae attends our programs every Saturday with not only herself but her seven siblings and cousins in hand. Being one of our faithful returning high school students attending our weekly programs, we wonder what has kept her coming back. According to Mae, "the interactions I have, the relationships I have formed with the volunteers and board members of WNA, is my most favorite part of this program." This is the place where she feels she is in a peaceful, fun and cool community where she can be in an environment free of chaos and arguing.
We asked her what her favorite activity has been so far, and it's the science experiment involving the mixing of vinegar, baking soda, hot water and tissue. She never had a clue that the mixing of these simple ingredients would make an explosive and she loved it. Fascinated by seeing something to erupt and learning the science causing these ingredients to react with one another was an experience she never had in all her academic career.
Mae has shown herself to be a responsible young adult who not only takes on a greater role in taking care of her family, but she is also willing to learn new subjects and partake in our activities no matter what our program for the day may be. Through her leadership in Church, family and involvement on Saturdays, we believe she is a perfect candidate for pursuing furthering her education provided the right tools. | | | |
